CAREER PATHWAYS
Fostering economic vitality through a committed partnership between SBCC, educational institutions, and a robust network of employers.

The SBCC Approach

In vulnerable and low-income communities, opportunities for professional advancement are often associated with local community colleges or public universities. SBCC’s Career Pathways challenges the conventional model, ushering in a new path for learning and professional development. Our innovative approach involves collaboration with local employers, unions, and educational institutions to develop pathways tailored to individuals’ unique skills and interests.

The Work We Do

Career Pathways offers a broad spectrum of educational opportunities across a wide range of disciplines, including Energy, Cybersecurity, Digital Media, Supply Chain, and Urban Teacher Fellowship (UTF). Through close collaboration with local employers, our innovative model ensures that individuals are not only equipped with knowledge but also nurtured with practical, real-world experience.

ENERGY PATHWAY
Nurturing lasting careers in the energy sector with comprehensive training and support.

The SBCC Approach

While the need for job and workforce development opportunities and access to continued education remains evident in our region, SBCC's Energy Pathway Program (EPP) is an innovative approach to skills development in the energy economy. With the support of our local industry  partners, we are dedicated to equipping individuals with essential skills for living-wage jobs in the energy sector.

The Work We Do

The EPP provides a one-year training program and a Certificate of Achievement in Process Technology from Coastline Community College to unemployed, underemployed, low-income individuals, and veterans in the Greater Los Angeles area. Preference is given to areas with historically limited access to employment training resources, including Wilmington, Carson, Long Beach, San Pedro, Harbor City, Inglewood, Hawthorne, Torrance, and Lomita. The EPP equips participants for process operator careers, aligning coursework with an ongoing AS-to-BS degree sequence in engineering for further education. SBCC actively assists graduates in securing employment opportunities, offering robust support including academic assistance, coaching, job placement aid, and post-hire career support.

The Outcome

Since its inception, the Energy Pathway Program has served a total of 492 individuals – roughly a 90% completion rate – and boasts an employment retention rate of 85%.

The Results

  • 90% of EPP participants will complete the program.
  • 80% of EPP graduates will be offered employment as process operators within 12 months of graduation.
  • 90% of hired process operators will retain employment for a minimum of 12 months.

URBAN TEACHER FELLOWSHIP

The SBCC Approach

SBCC’s Urban Teacher Fellowship (UTF) is designed to recruit a diverse population of graduating seniors who are interested in becoming teachers and giving back to the communities they grew up in. SBCC’s belief is that if teachers look and talk like the students they serve, students will flourish, and school will become a more relatable place.

The Work We Do

As part of the Urban Teacher Fellowship (UTF) SBCC recruits graduating seniors to participate in Coastline Community College’s Teach3 program. Students will complete an intensive 24-month program, earning an associate degree in Educational Studies (comprising 60 units). Embracing the cohort model, SBCC fosters a supportive social network among students, encouraging collaborative learning and growth. To further their education, we collaborate with Cal State University, Chico to ensure a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies and future credentials equivalent to a master’s degree. While students are enrolled in school, SBCC will place them as staff in after school programs where they will get hands-on experience working with grade-school students.
